Jurors deliberated for three hours Wednesday and one on Thursday before convicting Johnny Brown of killing 27-year-old Violar Bracey.
Hood said Judge Winston Kidd sentenced Brown to 20 years in prison as a habitual offender.
The state Supreme Court overturned Brown's 2006 murder conviction because the judge didn't tell jurors to consider defense arguments that Bracey was shot by accident.
Bracey was shot in the head. Her body was found Dec. 11, 2004, in a Jackson motel room.
State prosecutors handled Brown's retrial because District Attorney Robert Smith had represented Brown on an unrelated charge while working as a public defender.
