STARKVILLE — Starkville schools superintendent Judy Couey has been placed on indefinite leave.

School Board president Pickett Wilson tells the Starkville Daily News that Couey has taken a leave of absence and he did not know when she would return. Wilson would not say why the action was taken on the advice of the board's attorney.

The action was taken Wednesday during a closed meeting of the school board.

Couey declined comment Thursday.

Couey has been superintendent for three years, coming to Starkville from the Mississippi Department of Education. She formerly served as the Starkville schools' assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Delta State University in biology, natural sciences and education.
