Ahead of next week’s charity purse auction to benefit the Fairy Godmother Project, Rhonda Herring Horton and Maggie Caldwell presented Angie Gunter of Oxford a $1,000 scholarship to go back to school.
Herring and Caldwell wanted to help the single mom who is raising three children, one of whom has Down syndrome.
“That’s the type of thing fairy godmothers do,” Caldwell said.
Horton, Caldwell and an army of volunteers hope to raise $20,000 for the Fairy Godmother Project at this year’s event.
The Fairy Godmother Project brings together women from around the community who pool their resources to meet the needs they see. The project is an initiative of NEWMS – New Expectations for Women in Mississippi – and the CREATE Foundation.
Tickets to Tuesday’s event are $35; a $100 ticket includes a membership in NEWMS and Fairy Godmother status.
The annual auction will feature live and silent auctions, purse sales and food in a fun, girls-night-out atmosphere. More than 200 bags are lined up for the event. A number of purse distributors have donated brand new bags for the auction, such as Jessica Simpson, Hobo, Vera Bradley, Fossil, Kavu and Big Buddha.
“This year we have more new bags than ever,” Horton said.
This year, the auction scored several celebrity purses that will highlight the auction May 3.
Actress and entrepreneur Priscilla Presley has donated a black Michael Kors bag, which will be autographed and personalized for the winner. Mississippi first lady Marsha Barbour donated a brown Michael Kors bag.
