“We gave them 18 free bases,” said Pine Grove coach Brad Pounders.
The Lady Eagles (14-8) have a 1-0 lead in the best of three series. Game 2 is today at 2 p.m. in West Union.
Taylor did allow a season-high five walks and hit one batter. The Lady Panthers took advantage of two free passes in the third inning for their only runs. However, the senior captain settled in to strike out five over the next four innings.
“I was excited, but a little nervous too. It’s the playoffs and I’m a senior so any game could be my last,” said Taylor (11-4).
West Union coach Lisa Bogue said she was a little concerned about Pine Grove (11-12) and hoped to get off to a good start after a one week layoff.
“I was a bit nervous because Pine Grove is a good tough team at home,” said Bogue, who guided the Lady Eagles to the 1A North finals a year ago. “We wanted to try and get in a grove early, and I thought the girls showed a lot of discipline at the plate.”
The Lady Eagles had eight hits, three of which came off the bat of Julianna Garner. All three were two-RBI singles in the second, third and seventh inning. Leah Paige Goolsby had a RBI-triple for her team-high eighth three-bagger of the season.
