McInnis, Golden Eagles take Game 1 from UAB

HATTIESBURG – Southern Miss opened a Conference USA series with a victory for the fifth time in six weekends, beating UAB 4-2 on Friday night.

The league leader by two games heading into the weekend, No. 20 Southern Miss (34-11, 12-4) can clinch the series today in a game that starts at 2 p.m. UAB (25-20, 9-10) has lost 3 of its last 4 conference games.

Golden Eagles ace Todd McInnis (7-1) scattered eight hits in six innings and gave up two runs, one earned. Chase Horn pitched three hitless innings for his third save.

Catcher Jared Bales went 3 for 4 for drove in two runs in the victory. Southern Miss outhit UAB 10-8.
