TUPELO - Northeast Mississippi media outlets that covered the April 27 tornadoes that devastated Smithville and other areas will now team up to raise money to help with recovery.

Journal Inc., parent company of the Daily Journal, WTVA, Tupelo Radio Broadcasting and Mississippi Radio Group will host a fundraiser called Tornado Relief Effort 2011 on Saturday at The Mall at Barnes Crossing's Food Court.

The goal is to raise $50,000 during the event, which runs from 10 a.m. until noon and includes a telethon aired on WTVA and live radio remote broadcasts. Phones will be provided by CellularSouth and there will be 10 phone lines available.

Money will go to the CREATE Foundation and 100 percent of it will be used to address the needs of area tornado victims. Victims in counties outside Northeast Mississippi, including northwest Alabama, can receive money as well.

Donors can designate on their checks which county or community they would like their money to assist. If a donor makes no designation, the money will go in a local fund and be distributed as needed.

There will be giveaways throughout the event.

Donations can be made prior to Saturday and after by sending checks to CREATE Foundation, P.O. Box 1053, Tupelo, MS 38802 or donating online at www.create foundation.com.
