CORINTH – A plan to install a 4-way stop at the intersection of South Parkway Street and Droke Road has be canceled after further traffic studies show that it’s not needed.

The change in traffic patterns to cause through traffic on South Parkway to come to a full stop was scheduled to begin April 25.

As contractors completed the project to widen Droke Road to accommodate increased traffic to Corinth Elementary School, they installed and covered stop signs on South Parkway Street at the intersection.

After city officials, including At Large Alderman Mike Hopkins and Police Chief David Lancaster, received complaints about the planned change, the city board voted April 19 to postpone implementation until further studies could be completed.

“By doing the re-evaluation we determined there was no need for the 4-way stop,” said Johnny Crotts of Cook Coggin Engineers, the primary engineering liaison for the city of Corinth. The stop signs on South Parkway were removed earlier this month.

Projections before the opening of the school estimated that half of the traffic leaving the campus would flow to the east and half to the west.

However, Droke Road was closed for construction for almost a year and motorists developed traffic patterns that have most of them turning east toward South Harper Road when they leave the campus.
