OXFORD - Lafayette supervisors voted Monday to ban animals from county-owned storm shelters.

The measure came after reports that one couple had brought large dogs and even snakes into a shelter, making others afraid to use the shelter during a storm, and that a resident brought a monkey into another shelter.

Board Chairman Lloyd Oliphant was dubious that an ordinance would solve the problem but acknowledged that people should take precedence over pets or livestock.
