Patterson's bond was set at $5,000 for three counts of fraud in acquisition of controlled substance. He was being held in the Itawamba County jail. According to Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director Marshall Fisher, Patterson's arrest came after a three-month investigation.
Patterson is accused of taking undetermined amounts of morphine and hydrocodone from an Itawamba County man's home sometime after his death on Feb. 24.
Coroner Carolyn Gillentine-Green said Patterson was fired as deputy coroner Thursday. He had served as deputy coroner since 2007 and also is employed by Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency.
