Since the kickoff of Tornado Relief 2011, more than $60,000 has been raised for victims of the April 27 storms across Northeast Mississippi and Northwest Alabama.
About $53,000 of that was raised during a live telethon on May 28 at the Mall at Barnes Crossing. Tupelo-based media outlets teamed up to help raise the money, which is being collected by the CREATE Foundation.
The initial goal was $50,000 but after a successful event where the bulk of the money was collected in two hours it was decided to up the number to $100,000.
CREATE President Mike Clayborne said he is pleased with what has already been raised and hopes to meet the $100,000 goal. The CREATE Board meets July 13 and Clayborne said it will decide then what to do about raising the rest of the money.
"We are still collecting so people can feel free to make donations," said Clayborne.
Money can be sent directly to CREATE and a community where the donor wants it to go may be specified. For more information call (662) 844-8989.
