In the scam, "the caller tells the victim that they have 'won' money in a sweepstakes, etc., and are on the way to Oxford to award them the money," Martin said.
The scammers ask the victim to meet them for the transfer, he said. The callers do not show up but later call the victim again with an excuse for missing the liaison and asking the victim to wire the money instead.
"The bottom line is do not send money or even talk to folks about unsolicited 'prize' events," Martin said.
