Mayor Jack Reed Jr. unveiled the updated emblem Thursday evening at the Down on Main summer concert at Fairpark. The image retained its familiar starred-and-striped shield, but added a new date - 2011.
It symbolizes Tupelo's recent win of a fourth All-America City Award. The first three awards were acquired in 1967, 1989 and 1999. Those years also appear on the logo.
"You see four times an All-America City, I think it's just an extraordinary accomplishment that every citizen of Tupelo can be proud of," Reed said. "I think it will be an enormous benefit to Tupelo when we're recruiting people and companies."
Numerous city officials were consulted on the new design. And various prototypes were proposed before settling on one that made only minimal, necessary changes.
The city will use the new seal on displays, letterheads, street signs and promotional items.
"Everything that the city uses for its nomenclature, we certainly will begin tomorrow using the new ones for those purposes," Reed said Thursday. "We want to take immediate advantage of it."
