"One hundred and seventy-five years only comes around every 175 years," Itawamba County Development Council Executive Director Greg Deakle said to the Itawamba County Board of Supervisors recently. "I'd hate to see our 175th anniversary pass with no recognition at all."
Deakle's visit with the board served a double purpose: First, he both made and asked for suggestions of ways to celebrate the county's long history. Some of his own ideas included the possible publication of a coffee table book featuring photographs and articles about the history of the county; new signage at the highway entrances to Itawamba County; and a series of events that take place in Mantachie, Tremont and Fulton. He also suggested running some historical ads in the newspaper.
He plans to begin rolling out the various celebratory events in September.
"It's a fairly large endeavor," Deakle said. "I don't have the staff for all of it, so I'd like for you to consider who from your districts can serve on a committee and help raise some funds for this."
Once established, the group will help develop ideas for different programs and displays and aid in fundraising.
