Quarterback Randall Mackey will not play against BYU following his arrest on a disorderly conduct charge, but he was back with the team. His absence Tuesday was class-related, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said.
Nutt said Wednesday’s work was upbeat.
“The guys ran around and practice hard. We had a good practice,” he said. “I was impressed with the effort and work on correcting mistakes from (Tuesday). We really worked hard on ball-handling and on the defensive side, gap control and chasing the football to create turnovers.”
A number of defensive players have missed time with injuries. Defensive end Jason Jones remains out with a knee that took a hit in the first scrimmage on Aug. 13. Jones had been running first team, but his status for the opener is unclear.
Most players are back on the field, and that’s made it easier to practice, Nutt said.
The Rebels have begun to implement the BYU game plan. Saturday’s scrimmage will be a dress rehearsal of game-day routines.
