TUPELO – The tragedy and heroism of 9/11 will be commemorated in several Northeast Mississippi events and activities this weekend.

The city of Tupelo is holding a commemoration ceremony honoring first responders at 1:30 p.m. at the Lee County Library. It will be followed immediately by a lecture on life, love and death by Vanderbilt University philosophy professor Dr. John Lachs as part of the “Tupelo Reads” series around the book “Tuesdays with Morrie.”

The city of Verona is remembering 9/11 at 3 p.m. with a ceremony at the corner of College and Main streets. The city will pay tribute to all local first responders and is asking everyone in attendance to wear red, white and blue. In case of rain, the event will take place at the Fire Department.

In Oxford, volunteers are needed for Volunteer Oxford, the community’s new volunteer center, which will turn 9/11 into a day for volunteering.

Volunteers will take part in several service site activities that will benefit the hungry and remember those who died on 9/11. Local nonprofits benefitting from the volunteer day include The Pantry, Love Packs, More Than a Meal and Oxford Community Garden. Volunteers will also honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 by working alongside local heroes.

The day begins at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Oxford Activity Center. Volunteers will work that afternoon, with a 5 p.m. community supper at Lamar Park following. The community also will observe a moment of silence and recognize police, firefighters and military servicemen and women.
