This is done in conjunction with Wreaths across America which is held the second Saturday of December, simultaneously in all communities that take part. The local Gold Star Mothers are once again taking orders for the simple green wreath with the bright red bow to lay on the graves of the service men and women.
While folks here will want to make sure you get a wreath for your loved one who is buried in your cemetery, if you live outside Pontotoc county you may also purchase a wreath and have it laid on the grave of your loved one.
Wreaths Across America, a non profit 501-c3 organization, was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project started by Morrill Worcester of Worcester Wreath in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5,000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery.
The wreaths cost $15 each. The women will be able to get one extra wreath for three wreaths that are purchased. “The fourth wreath will be laid on graves that don’t have any family left to honor their service,” Bagwell said.
If you would like to sponsor a wreath please call Bagwell at 419-0441 and leave a message if she is unable to answer.
The wreath laying this year will be on December 11 which is exactly one month after Veteran’s day.
Someone will be on hand a the Veteran’s day parade to collect monies if anyone wants to purchase a wreath at that time.
People interested may also come by the Pontotoc Progress office and purchase a wreath.
The deadline for turning all money will be November 20, or the day of Christmas Open House in Pontotoc.
