Harold Kirkman's $22,000 bid was the highest of eight bids for an approximately 9-acre property on County Road 773 that was once the site of Centre School.
Kirkman said he intended to clean up the property, but not sell, subdivide or develop it. As someone who went to the former school, he said he wanted to be sure the property was kept clear and not developed inappropriately.
District 4 Supervisor Dennis Grisham said he opposes sale of the property.
However, if it were sold, Grisham said he believes the proximity to the county industrial park - about half a mile away - and its location on a state maintained road make it valuable for possible economic development.
The county board voted to reject the bids, but did not dismiss the possibility of readvertising.
