RIPLEY – Monday morning in Tippah County Circuit Court, Ripley Ward 3 Alderman Lonnie Lonnie Smith, 47, plead guilty to manslaughter in connection with the April, 2010 shooting death of Antrozon D. Wallace of Ripley after the two men got into a fight over drugs.

Smith was sentenced to 20 years composed of eight suspended and 12 to serve by Dist. 3 Circuit Judge Judge Gregory. Smith must also make restitution to the Wallace family for burial expenses. In connection with the guilty plea, Smith – a first term alderman -- resigned that position effective immediately.

The resignation means that a special election must be held to choose a successor to serve the remainder of Smith’s term, which expires in July, 2013.

As of Monday, no election had been scheduled.

Smith was represented by Ashland attorney Tony Farese. The state’s case was presented by Assistant District Attorney Kelly Luther.

Smith pled guilty under a plea bargain arrangement. He had been indicted on a capital murder charge in the case in October, 2010.
