WTVA-TV reports that the town is not looking to ban these dogs.
Okolona city attorney Gene Barton says the proposed ordinance defines a "dangerous animal" as a pit bull terrier or any Staffordshire bull terrier breed.
Barton says city residents with one of the dogs would pay $150 a year for a permit. An owner will also have to register the animal with the city.
He says the ordinance would also give law enforcement more control over dogs running at large. An owner would be fined if the animal is caught roaming the city.
Barton says he expects the council to consider the issue soon.
