The senior point guard stuffed the stat sheet in No. 18 Mississippi State’s 76-71 win over LSU. Bost recorded nine points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and three steals.
His final steal sealed the win, as he took the ball away from LSU point guard Anthony Hickey in the waning seconds.
“I wasn’t really looking to try to score. I was just trying to get my assists up,” Bost said. “Coach told me before the game, try to get 10 assists, and that’s what I did.”
Bost is the school’s career assists leader. He now has 548.
As for his final steal, Bost said, “He was shorter guy, so I knew he was going to try to throw it back. I used my length on him and got a deflection.”
Steele keeps hitting
Jalen Steele was not a one-game wonder.
After lighting up Vanderbilt on Saturday from 3-point range, he did the same to LSU. The sophomore scored 15 points, making 3 of 4 from behind the arc. His three with 9 minutes, 14 seconds left pushed State’s lead to 54-48.
Steele played with a deep thigh bruise suffered in practice Tuesday.
“You saw a guy playing with a lot of confidence, still feeling what he came off that Vandy game,” MSU coach Rick Stansbury said.
For the game, MSU made 5 of 14 from 3-point range.
LSU came in with a formidable-looking frontcourt, led by Iowa State transfer Justin Hamilton. Plus, highly touted freshman Johnny O’Bryant returned after missing several games with a broken hand.
Hamilton, who scored 27 on Florida last week, had a quiet 11 points, and LSU got only 23 points from its frontcourt.
MSU got 28 points from Arnett Moultrie, while Wendell Lewis played solid defense and added six points as he took some minutes for an ill Renardo Sidney.
With freshman backup point guard DeVille Smith still in the hospital, MSU is playing short-handed. That means a lot of minutes for the starters
Bost played 40 minutes, while Moultrie and Hood logged 37 apiece.
“There’s not a lot of room for resting right now,” Stansbury said. “Shaun Smith’s a guy we’ve got to try to work back into this thing a little bit. We need to buy some minutes from another body over there, because we’re down.”
