Omar Ben Jones, 78, died when he was unable to get out of a vehicle that was on fire, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Mobley.
The incident took place around 7:30 a.m. on Highway 370 just east of Highway 366.
"Troopers responded to a vehicle fire this morning and upon their arrival found a burned vehicle with a man inside," Mobley said. "Witnesses say they saw a smoking vehicle pull to the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle apparently caught on fire and the man was unable to get out of the vehicle."
The vehicle involved was a 1988 Dodge Dakota, silver in color.
The incident remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the State Fire Marshall's office are assisting in the investigation. There appears to be no foul play involved at this point.
