When the established in 1959, Lakeview Baptist Church actually had a lake view. Bro. Robert Garland said the pastor in the '60s even had a view from his office.

The pastor would say, “I just couldn't sit there. I'd have to get my fishing pole,” Garland said.

Though the view has changed over the years (the lakes are now the site of apartments and the cancer center), one thing has stayed the same. The church has stuck with a traditional worship style.

“I feel very strongly about that,” he said.

The Wednesday night teen church program, which focuses on “good old-fashioned preaching” and traditional hymns, continues to grow.

“It's very vibrant and exciting. The kids love it,” said Garland.

The church supports 138 missionaries in 38 different countries.

“Our focus is getting the gospel out here and around the world,” Garland said.

Another part of the church's ministry is Lakeview Baptist Academy, a K-12 school with an enrollment of around 70 and a staff of 10.

“We try to keep it small, so we can give the children a lot of individual attention,” he said.

Garland said the Bible is essential in the curriculum, but the core subjects are also taught. The academy is open to the general public.
