TUPELO – Tupelo students will begin classes on Tuesday, Aug. 7, after the school board adopted the calendar for the upcoming school year on Tuesday.

The adopted calendar is similar to the one approved by the Lee County School District. Classes will dismiss for Christmas break on Wednesday, Dec. 19 and will resume on Friday, Jan. 4. Graduation is scheduled for Friday, May 17, and the final day for underclassmen will by Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

Teachers will report on Aug. 3. Their last day will be May. 24.

Holidays include Labor Day (Sept. 3), Columbus Day (Oct. 8), Thanksgiving (Nov. 19-23), Christmas (Dec. 20-Jan. 3), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21), President’s Day (Feb. 18), Spring Break (March 11-15) and Easter (March 29 and April 1).

The calendar also received 60 percent of the 407 responses cast in a survey on the district’s website. The school district had posted two possible calendar options in that survey, which was posted last month. Participants included 150 parents, 139 teachers and 34 students.

In a related survey, a majority of parents said they wanted to participate in face-to-face parent-teacher meetings next year. Deputy Superintendent Diana Ezell said the district would work to schedule those meetings.
