COLUMBUS — Columbus police have made an arrest in the 1997 deal of an elderly man in the city.

Police Chief Selvain McQueen says 44-year-old Earnest Talley has been charged with murder in the death of 70-year-old George Wilbanks.

McQueen says Wilbanks was found dead in his home on Nov. 2, 1997. He says at the time, investigators felt Wilbanks knew his killer because nothing was taken from the home.

McQueen says Talley was being held in the Lowndes County jail on an unrelated burglary charge when he was arrested for Wilbanks' slaying on Thursday.

Talley was being held without bond in the murder charge pending an initial court appearance. It couldn't be determined if he has an attorney.
