Songs by Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, ABBA and The Bangles will be featured in “Seasons of the Soul,” which Tupelo High School’s Soundwave will present next weekend.
“It’s all different types of music, about how you feel at different times,” said Suzy White Williams, Soundwave director.
The songs span the decades and range of emotions.
“It’s a lot of bouncy songs,” said sophomore Soundwave member Lauren Bean.
Her fellow Soundwave member Camie Cole agreed.
“You can get up and tap your toes,” she said. “We have everything from the ‘60s with ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’ to modern pop with Lady Gaga.”
All of the songs are about a girl’s strong emotions.
“It’s all like, ‘I am woman, hear me roar,’” Cole said. “It’s not pretty, sissy, girly stuff.”
Cole said the show also deals with finding your place in the world.
“Like with (Lady Gaga’s) ‘Born This Way,’ it’s about identity. It’s an important thing when you’re trying to figure out who you are,” she said.
The sparkly costumes range from black sequined dresses to silver jackets to bright yellow and blue outfits. There are six costume changes in “Seasons of the Soul,” Williams said.
“They are so much fun,” Bean said of their shiny ensembles.
“Season of the Soul” features choreography by Sharon Long, Sarah Kerrant, Kellis McSparrin, Laura Godwin and Dexter Bishop.
The show has already been a winner for Soundwave.
The show choir placed at three competitions with “Seasons of the Soul,” including first place at the Music City Show Shoppe in Nashville.
