JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Part of a north Mississippi thoroughfare is being named the William R. "Bill" Minor Memorial Highway, for a state transportation commissioner who died in November 2010.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed two bills Monday that put the designation on U.S. Highway 78 through Marshall County, where Minor lived.

The two measures, House Bill 98 and Senate Bill 2119, will become law July 1.

Minor was a Democrat from Holly Springs. He was elected northern district transportation commissioner in 2003. Before that, he served 20 years in the Senate representing Marshall, Benton and DeSoto counties.
