PLANTERSVILLE – John Milton Sheffield, 82, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Itawamba County on July 10, 1929, to Eldrid Martin Sheffield and Tarlie Beatrice Loden Sheffield. After graduating high school, he attended Itawamba Community College and the University of Mississippi, where he received his degree in accounting. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. During his earlier career he worked as an accountant for the automobile industry and later owned and operated Central Motors in Tupelo for many years before retiring. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Dorsey.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. today at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Lynn Fair officiating. Private burial will follow in Dorsey Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to service time today.
Survivors include four daughters, Jennifer Sheffield Ellis and Lisa Ann Sheffield of Plantersville, Rosemary Sheffield McDonald (Jerry Harvill) of Olive Branch and Paula Dean Sheffield of Plantersville; grandchildren, Amanda Ellis Price, Audrey Helen “Travis” Stenmark (Gary), Phil Ellis, Heather Marie McDonald, Leah Ruth McDonald, Lori Marie Sparks, Anne Kathryn Sparks and Carie Elizabeth McDonald; great-grandchildren, Autumn Jade Long, John Ellis Price, Jack Richard Price, Lilly M. Sparks and Memory Leigh Sparks.

OSWEGO, Ill. – Tommy H Clingan, 64, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at his residence after a long illness. He was born May 13, 1947, in Belmont to Henderson and Rader Mae Bennett Clingan. He was a truck driver for many years prior to his retirement and a member of Teamsters Local 673. He was also a real estate agent for Century 21. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Candice Mieno Clingan; three daughters, Lisa (Bernardo) Clingan-Cruz of Naperville, Ill., Kristina Sawicki of Iuka and April Clingan of Aurora, Ill.; a son, Steven Clingan of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren, Victoria and Dominic Sawicki, Sofia and Isabella Cruz, and Summer Miller; a brother, William Clingan of Belmont; and a sister, Peggy Clingan of Dennis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jackie and Bobby; and a sister, Rachel.
A gathering of family and friends will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday until a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Old Union Baptist Church in Belmont. Pastor Ginn will officiate. Following the service, a reception will be held at Golden City Hall until 10 p.m.

TUPELO – Virginia Leavell Johnstone, 92, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at Avonlea Assisted Living after an extended illness. A native of the Cherry Creek community, she was born Jan. 20, 1920, to Halbert and Blanche Leavell. She was a wonderful homemaker who loved taking care of her family and loved ones. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, which she attended for many years. She taught Sunday School, served as a G.A. leader, and worked in Vacation Bible School. Her last three years at Avonlea Assisted Living, she loved playing the piano and singing the Christian songs she had learned through the years. She had a strong faith in God and loved her church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Gayle Alexander, the Rev. Dave Jensen and the Rev. Ricky Young officiating. Burial will be in Cherry Creek Cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Jack L. Johnstone, and her daughter, Virginia Carol Johnston (David), all of Tupelo; two grandchildren, Lisa Russell (Brady) and Chad Johnston (Jessica), all of Tupelo; three great-grandchildren, Reed Russell, Collin Russell and Anna Claire Russell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 46 years, Jack Johnstone; and her brother, Frank Leavell.

She was born June 27, 1934, to Stephen Merrell and Sadie Gamble. She worked for Kelloggs in Memphis and Walmart in Tupelo prior to her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tupelo.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens with Bro. Bobby Casteel officiating. Interment will at Memphis Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time today.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Durrell “Buck” Nelson of New Albany; two sons, Durrell Nelson Jr. (Becky) of Crozet, Va., and Steve Harvey (Terri) of Mount Pleasant, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one sister, Loucille Baugus; one niece, Charlotte Lomax.

NETTLETON – Janette Elaine Owens Simmons, 54, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at her home. She was born Sept. 27, 1957, in Aberdeen to Boyd Alba and Artvie Palmer Owens. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She looked forward to spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. Passionate about animals, her pets were her hobby. She enjoyed watching television with her husband and listening to country music.

WREN – James D. “Jim” Huffman, 75, died on Monday, April 16, 2012, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born on May 10, 1936, in Okolona, he was a son of the late James Andrew and Maida Elizabeth Pilgreen Huffman.
Jim was a graduate of Okolona High School, Class of 1956. On June 24, 1958, he married Robbie Bell. He had worked as the VP and CEO of Gulf Finance Corporation and in the clothing and auto parts businesses before returning to Amory and opening and operating The Windshield Surgeon and A-1 Quality Glass. For nine years, he served in the Army National Guard. Jim was a charter member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner with the J.A. Mayfield Masonic Lodge in Amory and was a past president of the Amory Kiwanis Club. Having a gentle heart, he loved his family and his country. Jim’s ministry was helping elderly church members with automotive needs and repairs. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, RV-ing, camping, traveling and meeting new people, and square dancing. An avid Ole Miss football fan, Jim’s three children were all Mississippi State University graduates. He was a Rebel with a yard full of Dawgs.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Sisk and the Rev. Warren Black officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in Amory Masonic Cemetery.

IUKA - Tharon Morgan, 84, died Sunday, April 15, 2012. He was a native of Prentiss County. He graduated from Holcut High School in 1950, attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College, and received his B.S. and master's degrees in education from Mississippi State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Iuka Gospel Chapel, the Alabama Education Association and the National Education Association. He began his long teaching career at Paden School in Paden, where he was a teacher and basketball coach. He taught, coached and served as school principal in Colbert County, Ala., for 32 years. Thirty of those years were at Littleville Junior High School in Littleville, Ala., where he retired at the end of the 1986-87 school year. After retiring, he gardened, truck farmed and worked in the yard with his wife. He enjoyed eating out with his family and at his birthday every year he treated his entire family to supper at a nice restaurant. An avid MSU fan, he loved watching the Bulldogs play football and basketball on television.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Morrison Funeral Home Chapel in Cherokee, Ala. The Rev. Sammy Wallace will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Iuka.
Survivors include a brother, Larry Morgan (Joyce); sisters, Elaine Claunch, Earlene Lentz (Marion), Shirley Walden (Gerald) and Margie Bray (Charles), all of Booneville; sisters-in-law, Johnnie Stephens and Joyce Brumley (Donald) of Iuka; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Shelby and Amanda Morgan; his wife of 49 years, Betty McBride Morgan, in January 2010; and two brothers, Clay McCoy, and an infant brother, Vernon.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Potts Camp First Baptist Church with Bro. Paul Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery in Potts Camp. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Andy W. "Bubba" Work (Connie) of Potts Camp, Jerry M. "Bandit" Work of Hickory Flat and Kenneth Lee Work (Gail) of Potts Camp; one daughter, Shirley Vance (Ray) of Potts Camp; one stepdaughter, Betty Smith of Memphis; one brother, Orville Rhynes of Potts Camp; four sisters, Hazel Foote, Pauline Hutchins and Marie Smith, all of Potts Camp, and Dean Pegram of Holly Springs; grandchildren, Tammy Work, Timothy Work, Phillip Work, Lendsay Work, Robert Marcus Work, Kent Work, Craig Work, Mike Owen, Steve Owen and Patricia Smith; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Andy Work; and her parents, Noble Rhynes and Pearl Free Rhynes.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
