JACKSON - The state Board of Education has approved a state takeover of the Aberdeen school district and named a conservator to run it.

The move is subject to Gov. Phil Bryant's approval of a "state of emergency" the board declared for the district.

The board named Bob Strebeck, who has been a conservator in five Mississippi districts, to the Aberdeen position at a salary of $170,000 a year. Strebeck, a Decatur resident, most recently has been conservator in the Sunflower County district.

The board acted today after hearing on Thursday a recommendation from the Commission on School Accreditation to declare an emergency in Aberdeen, paving the way for a state takeover. A commission report said the district failed 31 of 37 accreditation criteria.
