TUPELO – Jeff Norwood, hired as Tupelo High School’s boys’ basketball coach on Thursday, will also serve as Tupelo Schools’ graduation coach.

The new position was created during Thursday’s School Board meeting.

Incoming superintendent Gearl Loden has used graduation coaches before, including in Amory, where he currently works as superintendent. Norwood will work with students who are lagging behind in attendance, grades or discipline. Teachers will also recommend students to him.

Norwood will visit the homes of students who have recently dropped out and those in danger of doing so. He will also organize community dropout prevention resources.
