TUPELO - Walls Bargain Center will unveil a newly remodeled store next week.

The store has moved a wall, shifted its departments, installed new doors and spiffed up the floors as part of a major investment in the business.

The store will celebrate May 2-5 with free items and 10-minute deep discount blitzes.

Walls sells a smorgasbord of items and competes with stores like Big Lots and Ross Dress for Less. Merchandise varies, but as of last week, prominent items were women's apparel, flat-screen TVs, diapers, gardening supplies, home decor, health and beauty aids and home goods, such as towels, pots and dishes.

The store gets shipments regularly to replenish the shelves.

"We don't know what's coming," said General Manager Justin Stiles. "Ninety percent of the time we're just as surprised as they are. I've had to be a golf club salesman, a TV salesman. ... Our merchandise constantly changes so it's hard to become an expert on one thing."

The store on South Gloster Street is in the old Walmart building. It opened in 2001.

Walls has been renovated so the women's apparel department is front and center. Eight aisles in the front left corner of the store were knocked out to make room for the popular flooring department, which was in the back of the store.

The wall in the back has been moved up too so Walls' warehouse area could expand.

A large space is empty in the back to make room for a furniture shipment that's on its way, Stiles said.

The store also has made room for a shipment of women's and kid's clothes.

Walls buys its merchandise from other retailers who want to get rid of it for a variety of reasons, including dented goods, smoke damage or discontinued items.

"The longer it stays, the cheaper it gets," Stiles said. "Then, we'll start selling it by the bagful for a dollar. That's when the serious people come out."

May 5 will be the big day for Walls in terms of freebies. The first 100 moms will get free perfume. And throughout the day, Stiles will deeply discount surprise items in 10-minute intervals.

"It'll be random stuff up to 90 percent off," Stiles said.
