INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts have taken Mississippi State running back Vick Ballard in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

Ballard is listed at 5-foot-10, 217 pounds. His breakout season came in 2010 when he scored a school record 20 touchdowns, 19 of those on the ground, averaged 5.2 yards per carry and finished with 968 yards rushing. Last season, he carried 193 times for 1,189 yards, a 6.2 average, and scored 10 touchdowns.

He also gained publicity during the NFL's annual scouting combine when he tripped during the 40-yard dash and fell into a camera.

The Colts have used five of their first six draft picks on offensive players. Earlier in the fifth round, they selected 316-pound defensive tackle Josh Chapman from Alabama.

Indy still had four picks left.
