The Smithville Lady Seminoles did their part to continue rebuilding efforts, Saturday finishing a sweep of Myrtle in the best-of-three Class 1A playoffs series with a 9-2 win.
"They were focused," Smithville coach Jeremy Duke said. "Everybody has been a part of the memorials but they were also focused on softball.
Senior pitcher Meagan Whitehead returned to the lineup for the first time in three weeks after suffering a broken hand at Tupelo.
Angel Guyton started both games against Myrtle, Friday's a 12-2 road win. Saturday, Whitehead went 3 for 4 and drove in four. Keely Chunn had an RBI triple for Myrtle.
The Lady Seminoles have won five straight division titles in Duke's five seasons and are 37-1 in division games. Smithville (17-9) will face Pine Grove in the quarterfinals.
Kossuth and Smithville both lost Game 1s in the second round of the baseball playoffs. Both rebounded and won two straight to advance.
Kossuth beat Water Valley 12-5, thanks in part to a David Gibson grand slam. The Aggies will face South Pontotoc in the quarterfinals.
Hatley 3, Eupora 1: Starting pitchers Lesley Hudson and Amber Dean pitched shutouts through four innings.
Hatley got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Hudson reached on an error and came home on Katy Duling's triple. Duling scored on Mary Katherine Reeves' groundout. The Lady Tigers added another run in the sixth on Jamelle Vance's RBI single. Hatley swept the series and will face East Webster.
Mooreville 23 Winona 13: The Lady Troopers swept the series with 16 hits, three each from Meagan Edmonds and Betsy Kingsley.
