Varsity Choir, Bel Canto Advanced Women’s Choir, Women’s Chorale, Concert Choir and the Vocal Jazz group are all performing at the THS Choral program on Tuesday night. The show is a send-off for a busy year full of performances and awards, said choral director Suzy White Williams. The Madrigals performed more than 20 times and other groups like Advanced Women’s Choir and Concert Choir had successful shows at Celebration Village, Sanctuary Hospice House and more.
“The choirs have had great success this year with Varsity and Madrigals getting superiors (scores) at district competitions,” Williams said.
The group of students who made up the Madrigals in the fall are now the Vocal Jazz group in the spring.
“We’re learning fun and entertaining jazz songs, and we enjoy singing them,” said Kara Young, a senior at THS and member of the Vocal Jazz choir. “It’s definitely a divergence, because madrigal music is so tight, you have to be in perfect harmony, and jazz has the flavor of the blues.”
Unlike in the fall, when the students don historically-accurate costumes for Madrigals, they get to wear black party dresses and tuxes for the jazz performance, said Joseph Rebentisch.
The set list includes jazz tunes like “Blue Skies,” “Anything Goes” and “Fly Me to the Moon,” as well as a few songs they’ve turned into jazz numbers, like Coldplay’s “Fix You.”
Besides music, the concert will include student awards.
“I would definitely encourage the community to support what the students within the choral department do,” Young said.
Auditions for next year’s choral groups are at 3 p.m. today for show choirs and 3 p.m. May 9 for Madrigals.
