VERONA — First-time violators of Verona's animal control ordinance will now face higher fines.

WTVA-TV reports that the Verona Board of Aldermen approved the higher fines Tuesday.

The penalty is now $250 per animal for violators of the code. The old fine for violators was $50.

Police Chief Anthony Anderson says the higher fines are not directed at any animal owners in particular.

Anderson says it deals with the housing of the animal. He says the animals should be in a pen not chained in the backyard.
