Relay for Life season

is off and running

Over the next two weeks, six Northeast Mississippi counties will celebrate their efforts in the fight against cancer.

Relay for Life events, which begin at 6 p.m., will be held:

Today

• Chickasaw County – Joe Brigance Park, Houston; Lafayette County – Oxford Mall parking lot; Lee County – Fairpark in downtown Tupelo; Monroe County – Frisco Park, Amory; Oktibbeha County – Starkville Sportsplex.

May 11

• Clay County – Sally Kate Winters Park, West Point.

Also, May 12, a concert featuring Breaking Grass and Volume Five will begin at 6 p.m. at Prentiss County Agri-Center in Booneville. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Call (662) 416-3375.

Minister honored for

hospice volunteer work

The Rev. David Smith has been honored as North Mississippi Medical Center's Hospice Volunteer of the Year for 2011-2012.

Smith became a volunteer chaplain in April 2001. He is an associate minister at Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo, where he has served for 33 years.

In addition to his role with NMMC Hospice, he also serves as a volunteer chaplain at NMMC-Tupelo, and is a United Blood Services blood drive coordinator. He and his wife Debbie live in Tupelo.

Tie Dye continues

colorful tradition May 19

The third annual Tie Dye Invitational will be “the place to be at 8:43” on May 19.

The annual 5K brings the wacky, healthy fun of HealthWorks! Children’s Health Education Center to the Tupelo Cross Country Trail at Ballard Park.

The race will celebrate the completion of the Lighten Up program, which is sponsored by HealthWorks!, Lee County Medical Alliance and Tupelo Kiwanis, but is open to the community.

The registration fee is $15 through May 15 and $20 after. All pre-registrants are guaranteed a T-shirt.

Goal setting, awards

share spotlight on May 15

“A New Day or Just Another One?" will be the topic of the North Mississippi Medical Center Woman's Place Lunchtime Learning Series at noon May 15, at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, located at the corner of Jefferson and Church streets.

Janie Walters of Champion Communications will speak about living your dreams, goal setting and time management. Regional Spirit of Women Award winners will also be announced during the luncheon.
