UPDATE: Mississippi State student from Tupelo dies in auto accident

A one vehicle crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. Friday evening on MS Highway 45 Alternate in Monroe County, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Tropper Brian C. Mobley Public Affairs Officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G District 5 in Starkville.

The fatality was Katherine 'Katie' Elizabeth Carruth, a 21-year-old female from Tupelo. Carruth's Facebook page says she is a Mississippi State student. According to friends she was moving from the MSU campus for the summer.

Ms. Carruth was driving a White 1996 Ford Explorer, and was traveling north on MS Highway 45 Alternate. According to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley, the location was US Highway 45 Alternate in Northbound Lane, less than a mile south of the 45A and 41 Intersection in Monroe County, just southeast of Okolona.

The vehicle traveled off the roadway and overturned several times. Ms. Carruth was ejected from the vehicle. There were no passengers in her vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by Gurley. She was not wearing her seatbelt. The crash is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.

Gurley said the cause of death is multiple trauma.

Her funeral arrangements will be handled by Holland Funeral Directors of Tupelo.
