Delta State wins opener in Division II World Series

After an hour-plus rain delay, Delta State scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat St. Mary’s 4-1 in the opener at the Divsion II World Series on Sunday.

Mooreville’s Ben Kingsley was 1 for 4 and scored the Statesmen first run in the fourth inning.

In the eighth, Kingley had a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third and set the plate for a big inning. Then Mike Vinson hit a two-run double for his third RBI of the day to give Delta a 3-1 lead.

Josh Branstetter (8-3) gave up four hits and one run in six innings for the win. Aaron Newcomb pitched the final three innings to pick up the save.

The Statesmen (47-13) will play Catawba on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Colton Mitchell (8-1, 3.11 ERA), who pitched a perfect game this season, will likely start for the Statesmen.
