Delta State falls at D-II World Series, plays today

Delta State suffered its first loss at the Division II World Series in Cary, N.C., on Thursday.

Once-beaten Minnesota State-Mankato beat the Statesmen 1-0 early on Thursday.

Former Mooreville standout Ben Kingsley had was 2 for 4 while the Statesmen managed only six hits. Kinglsey led off the second inning with a triple but was stranded there.

The Statesmen threatened again in the eighth but Mankato starter Tyler Ockuly (7-3) pitched out of the jam to pick up the complete-game win.

Aaron Newcomb (11-4) took the loss for Delta State.

The Mavericks (50-11) and the Statesmen (48-13) will play today with the winner to face West Chester in Saturday’s title game.
