OXFORD — A north Mississippi physician plans to open a treatment facility for adults with chemical dependency.

The Oxford Eagle reports the Mississippi State Department of Health issued a certificate of need this past week for a 35-bed facility in Etta, about 18 miles northeast of Oxford. The application says the facility will open 30 days after the certificate is granted.

Planners say the facility, called the Oxford Centre, initially will have 16 beds and will add more each year as demand increases until it reaches 26. Six beds will be dedicated for medical detox.

Dr. Thomas D. Fowlkes will serve as the chief medical officer and director. He runs a medical clinic in Oxford that serves uninsured patients.

Tri-Lakes Medical Center filed an objection to the certificate of need.
