Cole tells the Clarion-Ledger that when the party's executive committee meets June 30 in Jackson, he'll ask it to combine the executive director and chairman offices.
Cole is running for party chairman. Cole previously served as chairman from 2001-2004.
Cole is paid about $60,000 a year as executive director. He says he will suggest the salary remain the same.
Cole says the chairman would spend 40 hours a week fundraising and providing political leadership while letting other staff members deal with day-to-day administrative duties.
Current Democratic Party Chairman Jamie Franks, who had announced earlier that he would not seek re-election, is supporting Cole.
