A man has been confirmed killed and traffic was backed up on Highway 45 near Verona Sunday after shots were fired related to a pursuit, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Here is what we know ...

Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green confirmed that a 40-year-old man was killed in the incident on Highway 45 this afternoon. The man's name was not released, but she said an autopsy would be conducted on Monday.

Traffic was rerouted throughout the area and no cars were allowed on Highway 45 near Verona.

EYE WITNESS REPORT: One eye-witness saw some of the action on Highway 45 this afternoon.

Amber Armstrong of the Troy community in Pontotoc was driving with her family on the southbound lane of Highway 45 at about 4:40 p.m. Sunday when she saw several police vehicles coming up behind her. She pulled over to let them pass, she said, and the vehicles stopped a few times before finally stopping all traffic in the southbound lane near the Verona exit.

Officers in the police vehicles pulled out guns from the trunks and laid out spikes on Highway 45 north.

A vehicle Armstrong described as a "huge, hunter green SUV" was driving north in the northbound lane and hit the spikes. The vehicle lost control and hit the median, heading toward the traffic in the southbound lane before coming to a stop in the median.

"It was coming in the direction of our car. I freaked out," Armstrong said. Though police told drivers like Armstrong to stay where they were, Armstrong turned around in the grass and left.

Armstrong said she saw the driver of the SUV and described him as a "light-skinned black male or a white male," and said he "took off running. I don't know if they caught him."

More details as they are available.
