Mississippi State freshman Fred Thomas has been academically cleared by the NCAA to play this season.

The 6-foot-5 guard from Jackson enrolled in classes Tuesday, the day after the fall term began.

First-year coach Rick Ray said recently that he was expecting Thomas, who’d been taking summer courses, to be cleared.

Thomas led Jim Hill High School to the Class 6A state title last season, hitting a late 3-pointer for the winning points against Tupelo in the championship game. He averaged 19.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a senior.

He’s one of seven newcomers this season and is expected to compete for a starting job.
