The Mississippi Painters Society’s exhibit, “All Things Mississippi,”
opens today at the GumTree Museum of Art. The exhibit features
work by Mississippi painters such as Juanita Smith, Rhonda Grammer,
Dot Courson, John Armistead, Bruce Bigelow, Jim Tidwell and
Jane Sutton. The subjects are the people and places of the Magnolia
State. The painting shown here is by Smith. An opening reception is

Go back to the ’80s with West of Shake Rag

Tupelo comedy troupe West of Shake Rag celebrates back to school with its “Saturday Detention” show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Since the show has a “Breakfast Club” theme, there will be a prize for the audience member dressed in their best 1980s-inspired outfit.

Tickets are just $5, and that includes free popcorn. The show is at the Black Box Theatre at the Link Centre.

Bluegrass, gospel sounds showcased at dulcimer show

Fans of old-time bluegrass and gospel will enjoy a show by the North Mississippi Dulcimer Association.

The group performs gospel, traditional songs and bluegrass on dulcimers. The show is set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitors Center located near milepost 266 in Tupelo.

It’s a free show.

The Whigs to play Larry’s ahead of CD release

Athens, Ga.-based rock band The Whigs will release its fourth studio album, “Enjoy the Company,” on Sept. 18, and you can hear new tunes at the band’s show on Friday at Proud Larry’s.
