George McIntosh

OXFORD - George Lee "Luff" McIntosh, 45, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at his home in Oxford. He was a native of Lafayette County. He was a floor finisher at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Philadelphia M.B. Church in Oxford with the Rev. Alfred Hall officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hodges-Serenity Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta McIntosh of Oxford; four sisters, Annie Pearl Smith and Tracey Williams, both of Oxford, and Cassandra Burney and J.J. Berry, both of Racine, Wis.; five brothers, David McIntosh of Oxford, Robert Garner of Abbeville, Guy McIntosh of New Albany, and Wendell Burney and Anthony Berry, both of Racine, Wis.

Rev. James Carson

DALLAS - The Rev. James Dale Carson, 62, formerly of Bruce, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at the Medical City Dallas Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He was born Dec. 16, 1949, in Memphis. He was a graduate of Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tenn., and Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He was an ordained minister who served churches in Northern Mississippi, including Tula. He was a missionary in Sierra Leone. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, the McLaughlin Sunday School Class and the Sanctuary Choir. He was employed at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce. Dr. Charles Nestor will officiate, and Bro. Dale Easley and Bro. Chester Quarles will assist. Burial will be in the Bruce Cemetery.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the First Baptist Dallas Heritage Chapel in Dallas.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Lee Harris Carson of Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Obie Carson and Eva Mae Vanlandingham Carson.

Pallbearers will be Sammy Carson, John McKinney, Dale McKinney, Justin Ware, Robert Edward Oakley and Charles Herring.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Beckett, Miles Jeffrey, Benny Doler, Tom McKelroy, Eddie Carson, Lee Ottis Vanlandingham, Tommy Collins, Bruce Longest, Roy McDowell, A.D. Spratlin, Robert Young, John Edward Brasher and Tommy Willis.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Estelle Francis

PLANTERSVILLE - Estelle Long Francis, 98, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at the Tupelo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Lee County. She was a graduate of Tupelo High School. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, traveling, playing cards with friends, and spending time with her friends family. When able, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Plantersville, where she had served in many roles. She was a kind, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed by her entire family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holland-Harris Funeral Directors Tupelo Chapel with the Rev. Danny Balint and the Rev. Truman Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Plantersville Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Crubaugh (John) of Brewer; one daughter-in-law, Mary Miller Francis of Plantersville; two granddaughters, Janice Gray (Bill) of Lake Charles, La., and Dee Schmidt (Kendall) of Austin, Texas; two grandsons, Ronnie Francis (Sara Beth) and Joe Crubaugh (Jodi), both of Madison, Ala.; 10 great-grandchildren, Jessica Gray, Joshua Gray, Karen Francis Canevaro, David Francis, Andrew Francis, Jake Schmidt, Savannah Schmidt, William Crubaugh, Tyler Crubaugh and Ana Crubaugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Howard Francis; her son, Billy Francis and daughter-in law, Luzell Francis; her father and mother, Monroe and Dezzi Long; her brothers, Chester Long and Rod Long; and her sisters, Hazel Turner, Montez Long and Evie Long.

Pallbearers will be the great-grandsons, Joshua Gray, David Francis, Andrew Francis, Jake Schmidt, William Crubaugh and Tyler Crubaugh, and Gene Williams.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Homer Fry

IUKA - Homer Fry, 94, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Iuka. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Cutshall Funeral Home in Iuka. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Iuka Church of Christ.

Johnnie Cole Sr.

SHANNON - Johnnie Paris "Son" Cole Sr., 77, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at the Shearer-Richardson Memorial Nursing Home in Okolona. He was born March 27, 1931, to Paris Cole and Clara Bell McGaughy Cole. He was a member of Pine Grove M.B. Church in Shannon and a graduate of Siggers High School. He married Lovell Coleman in 1955. He was a concrete finisher. He enjoyed gardening, raising chickens and other foul, horses, hunting, fishing and baseball teams.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Grove M.B. Church with the Rev. G.L. Kendrick officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Agnew and Sons Funeral Home of Verona is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lovell Cole of Shannon; his children, Carol D. Word (Tom) and Johnny P. Cole Jr. (Evelyn), both of Shannon, Linda J. Page (Demetus) of Tupelo, Titus J. Cole (Demetra), Samuel L. Cole (Felicia), Doris J. Cole and Clara B. Smith (Rodney), all of Shannon; 12 grandchildren, three great-granddaughters; two sisters, Everlois C.H. Morris of Shannon and Marge Young of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two nieces, Mary C. Griffin and Georgia McGhee; a sister-in-law, Modess Echeazu and a brother-in-law, Sammie Coleman (Demetris).

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a daughter, Everlois Marie Cole, on Sept. 30, 1996.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today with the family hour from 5 to 6 p.m. today. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time Saturday.

Pop Nunley

BOONEVILLE - Alvin Roy "Pop" Nunley, 82, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at his home in Booneville. He was a former employee of Samp&J Ready-Mix for 38 years and a security guard for 15 years. He was a member of West Booneville Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing and watching sports on television.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Ward Hogland officiating. Burial will be in East Prentiss Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Willodean Smith Nunley; two sons, Terry (Delila) Nunley and Larry Roy (Pam) Nunley, both of Booneville; two sisters, Florence Easton of Norfolk, Va., and Betty Owens of Booneville; 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy C. and Annie Ruth Tyra Nunley, and two daughters, Diane Ross and Renaa Barnes.

Pallbearers will be Scott Nunley, Shane Ross, Jeremy Barnes, Jeremy Nichols, Michael Nunley and Shawn Horton.

Visitation will continue until service time today at the funeral home.

Eunice Woods

EUPORA - Eunice Woods, 97, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center Long Term Care Facility in Eupora. She was born Jan. 6, 1902 in Montgomery County to John Thomas and Lora Caffey Woods. She graduated from Springhill High School.She was a longtime resident of Columbus, where she was secretary for the R.C. Cola Bottling Co. for many years. She was an active member of the Pilot Club and a member of the First Baptist Church in Columbus. She participated in many volunteer activities and the Columbus Pilgrimage. After retiring she moved to Eupora, where she took care of her mother until her death. She was an active member of the Eupora First Baptist Church, the Joy Club and the garden club. She moved to the Long Term Care Facility and continued to live her life to the fullest. She inspired others with her agility, sense of humor and positive attitude.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Eupora with Bro. Travis Gray officiating. Burial will be in the North Union cemetery in Bellefontaine.

Survivors include two brothers, Melvin Woods of Jackson and Donald (Frances) Woods of Walthall; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sister, Ona Webb, Winnie Clanton and Mary Lou Gilmond; and two brothers, Dorrie Woods and W.C. Woods.

Kay Cummings

TUPELO - Kay Frances Gray Cummings, 69, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born Aug. 18, 1939, in Tupelo to George and Ruby Gray. She was a member of White Hill M.B. Church in Tupelo. She was married to Jimmy Lee Cummings. She was employed at the Thomas Building, Camp&E Cleaners, Holiday Inn, Lawhon School cafeteria, Super Sagless and in individual homes. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Red Oak Grove M.B. Church in Tupelo. Dr. Charlie F. Barnes will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Agnew and Sons Funeral Home of Verona is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her children, Johnny C. (Faye) Gray of Kankakee, Ill., Larry D. Gray (friend, Indianna), Wanda K. Gray, Brenda L. Agnew (friend, Dennis), Diane Anderson Brown and Jimmy W. (Michelle) Cummings, all of Tupelo; a special friend, John Earl Allen; 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tommie (Ethel) Gray and Jerry (Minnie Pearl) Gray; sisters-in-law, Annie Lou Gray, Sarah Gray, Mary Gray, Betty Lou Cleveland, Annie M. Rhodes, Sadie Rogers, Myrtle Seals, Olean Marshall, Lorene Seals and Maxcine Cummings; brothers-in-law, Michael and John Cummings; good friends, Grace Woods and Vickie Boggan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lucy McLaurin; and brothers, Eddie, Frank, J.T., Woodrow and J.B. Sr.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today with the family hour from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. today. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.

MABEN - Ronnie Lee Makamson, 51, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, in Franklin, Ky. He was born Dec. 16, 1957, in Clarksdale. He was a truck driver and a member of Self Creek Baptist Church in Oktibbeha County.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Double Springs Baptist Church in Oktibbeha County with Bro. Nick Cannady officiating. Burial will be in Double Springs Baptist Cemetery. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Euvette Makamson of Maben; his mother, Catherine Makamson of Pontotoc; five daughters, Felicia Tiggs of Dalehart, Texas, Carol Newett of Charleston, S.C., Vivian Tuck of Maben, Susan Makamson of Ackerman and Michelle Doyen of Pomeroy, Iowa; two sons, Richard Miller of Floral City, Fla., and Robert Miller of Ackerman; three brothers, Lynn Makamson of Southaven, Jimmy Makamson of Pontotoc and Charles Vaught of Corinth; 18 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, H.A. Makamson, and a brother, Robert.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Phyllis Barker

OXFORD - Phyllis Muriel Barker, 84, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She moved to the Oxford area from Memphis in 1992. She was a retired receptionist at the Colonial Country Club and a member of Pine Bluff Church of Christ. She enjoyed doing many things, especially reading and spending time with her family.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pine Bluff Church of Christ Cemetery in Oxford with Bro. Nathan Swanson officiating. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Bobby Barker of Nesbit, and Leonard Barker and Danny Barker, both of Oxford; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Barker, and her parents, Ashley and Hazel Goodwin.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Betty Winters

HAMILTON, Ala. - Betty Jean Mitchell Winters died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at the Marion Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Franklin County, Ala., to George and Lillian Taylor Oliver.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Marion County Funeral Home with Bro. Russ Hill officiating. Burial was in the Love Joy Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Carol Ferrell (Edward) of Hamilton, Ala., Sue Shelton of Atlanta, Ga., Eddie Mitchell (Katy) of Arkansas, Michael Mitchell (Susan) of Mooreville, Danny Mitchell (Bonnie) of Guin, Ala., and Bruce "Sam" Mitchell (Karen) of Texas; one sister, Mattie Stone (James) of Fulton; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a special friend, Paul Farley of Hodges, Ala.; a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Hubert Mitchell and Ed Winters; two grandsons, Anthony "A.J." Beck and Blake Mitchell; her parents; three sisters, Estell Stidham, Lillian Childers and Carnell Mitchell;and two brothers, Mack, Warren and Rather Oliver.

Robbie Lewis

BALDWYN - Robbie Lashay "Shay" Lewis, 25, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born Aug. 10, 1983, in Tupelo. She was a homemaker.

Private services were held. Waters Funeral Home of Baldwyn was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her mother, Lisa Kennedy (Robert) of Ellenton, Fla.; her father, Robbie Lewis (Karen) of Cullman, Ala.; a special friend, Matthew Stacks; four children, Blayton Michael, Jayden Wayne, Matthew Dalton and Kolton Seth; one brother, Dustin, of Ellenton, Fla.; her grandparents, Arnold Pettigo of Baldwyn, Linda Southern of Booneville, Bob and Janice Lewis of Mooreville, and Carol and Walter Wellford of Red Bay, Ala.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Shay Lewis Fund in care of her mother, Lisa Kennedy, at the Regions Bank, 3815 U.S. Hwy. 301 N., Ellenton, FL 34222.

Ruby Johnson

ACKERMAN - Ruby Jean Johnson, 54, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. She was a native of Greenville and a longtime resident of Ackerman. She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church in Ackerman. She loved cooking and sewing for her family, gardening, her flowers and family get-togethers.

Survivors include one son, Terry M. Bowie Jr. of Ackerman; two sisters, Janet Power of Ashland and Nancy Bright of Weir; three brothers, George Russell James Jr. and Virgin Allen James, both of Maben, and Norman Thomas James of Canton; 13 nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held later. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of local arrangements.

Ruth Mae Fitzpatrick

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Ruth Mae Fitzpatrick, 95, formerly of Pontotoc, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, in Grand Rapids, Mich. She was born Oct. 3, 1913, to William and Luegen Crawford. She was a former member of Usher Valley United Methodist Church in Pontotoc.

Services were held Friday, Feb. 20, in Grand Rapids. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc was in charge of local arrangements.

Survivors include one son, William (Dorothy) Fitzpatrick of Grand Rapids; 27 grandchildren and 104 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Fitzpatrick; four children, Ossie Lee Garret, Estelle Wilson, Robert Fitzpatrick and Slettie Bee Wilson; and three grandchildren, Mahaley Foote, John Howard Wilson and William Fitzpatrick Jr.
