RIPLEY – Concern for stray animals throughout Tippah County has led a group of citizens to launch plans for an animal rescue organization.
An organizational meeting is planned for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the offices of Murray Law Firm, 104 S. Commerce St., Ripley.
“This is truly a crisis that must be addressed for the safety of the animals and our citizens,” said attorney Joe Murray, spokesman for Animal Rescue of Tippah County. “Permitting these helpless animals to wander aimlessly in search of food and water is not just cruel. It creates a safety risk for the citizens of Tippah County.”
That genuine need prompted Evie Murray to move beyond helping a stray cat here and there to seeking shelter for the many strays she encountered. Finding there was nowhere in Tippah County to take them she launched a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ SaveTheStraysInTippahCounty.
There she found a widespread response, with more than 100 “likes” being garnered very quickly.
“People have recognized there is a problem and are coming together to create a humane solution,” Joe Murray said.
The problem has been growing for some time, he said, and addressing it now will bring improvements to the community.
“In Genesis, God gave humans dominion over the animals,” Joe Murray said. “We have a responsibility, both moral and ethical, to care for these animals and to make sure they are not neglected.”
