They weren’t so lucky the second time around as the junior third baseman doubled in a much-needed insurance run for the Lady Tigers to wrap up a 7-5 Division 2-3A slowpitch softball win.
Pounds and Tackett, the No. 2 and 3 hitters for Nettleton (14-2, 3-1), combined for five hits and five RBIs and gave the Lady Tigers a 4-1 lead after three innings. Pounds hit a solo shot in the first and a two-run homer in the third when Tackett followed her up with a home run to left center.
“We knew this was coming with Kaleigh,” Nettleton coach Dana Rhea said. “She started out the season hot, and she’s cooled off a bit, but she’s a great player. I don’t want them to walk Jabria, but I also don’t want anyone else around here hitting behind her but Kaleigh Tackett.”
The Lady Troopers’ bats heated up in the third and fourth innings. Katie Hunt put Mooreville on the board with her solo home run in third, and added four runs in the fourth, including a two-run single by Kelsey Minga to give the Lady Troopers a 5-4 lead.
Nettleton pitcher Anna Kent held Mooreville to one hit, a single by Miah Edmonds, for the rest of the game, and the Lady Tigers tacked on a run in each of the next three innings.
Senior first baseman Chelsea Tucker walked to lead off the fourth and scored on Lauren Baldwyn’s RBI single. Brittany Adams knocked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth with the double, and Tackett’s double in the sixth after Pounds was walked for the second time added the final run of the game.
Solid defense in the outfield and by Baldwyn at shortstop and second baseman Molly Bramlett kept the bases empty for the last two innings.
“That’s one thing we always coach is that defense is going to win it,” Rhea said. “You have to hit, but you can’t give teams like Mooreville extra opportunities and expect to beat them. We did a good job tonight of not giving them extra outs.”
For Mooreville, senior Bentley Cochran went 2 for 3. Tackett led Nettleton with three hits, while Pounds, Adams, Tucker and Baldwyn all had a pair of hits for the Lady Tigers.
