OXFORD – The University of Mississippi elected its first black homecoming queen in the same year it commemorates the 50th anniversary of its integration.

Courtney Pearson of Memphis was chosen homecoming queen on Thursday night in an election by the student body. Pearson will be crowned at Ole Miss’ Oct. 13 homecoming football game against Auburn.

In another first, last fall, students selected Kimbrely Dandridge as the university’s first black female student body president.
