The City Council unanimously approved the new names Tuesday.
Willena will revert back to Ashley Street; Road 91 will become Prairie Cove; Road 105 will become Hill-Scott Lane; Road 1188 will become Frog Meadow Lane; and Road 1376 will become Priscilla Lane.
Two other street name changes requested by residents were rejected on the advice of Lee County E911 because they were too similar to existing city street names. They were Roads 35 and 103, which will keep their originally changed names of Vaughn Road and Fox Farm Road, respectively.
The council on Sept. 4 had approved a list of 125 county roads that now belong to the city following its annexation of six different areas. Roughly 50 of those streets were assigned new names to bring them into compliance with municipal and emergency regulations.
"As a rule of thumb, named streets are in the city and numbered streets are in the county," said Lee County E911 Director Paul Harkins at the time.
E911 worked with the city to select new names. They didn't seek input from the residents but were willing to consider suggested alternatives after the fact.
The time for further change, though, appears over.
"This has really got to be it," said City Planner Pat Falkner, "because what happens now is you're going to inconvenience everybody with another change."
Lee County E911 now will determine which of the 1,245 annexed properties will need new address numbers. In general, the city uses a four-digit number scheme whereas the county uses three digits.
No timeline has been set for house number changes. But once it's done, the U.S. Postal Service will register the new addresses and street names.
It will take roughly six weeks for Tupelo to order and install new street signs for the roads. Even those keeping their original names will get new signs.
This story was modified to reflect the following corrections: Road 37 will remain Cunningham; not Jessamy. Willena Street will revert back to Ashley Street.
