An ESPN documentary about former Mississippi State football coach Sylvester Croom will air at 6 p.m. today on ESPNU.

“Croom” examines the significance of MSU hiring the first black head football coach in the SEC. Croom was head coach from 2004-08, compiling a record of 21-38 with one bowl appearance.

He took over a program that was struggling and vowed to run a tight, clean ship. While strict discipline became a hallmark of Croom’s tenure, he never could field a consistent winner, which led to what the Alabama native called a forced resignation after five seasons.

The film is directed by Johnson McKelvy, and it’s the fifth installment of the “Storied” series.
