The marker will be at the northwest corner of the Lyceum, the main administrative building on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford. A ceremony is set for 11 a.m.
Meredith first applied for admission to the university in early 1961. After a lengthy court battle, federal judges found in 1962 that the university had denied Meredith's admission solely because of his race, and they ordered the university to admit him.
Starting Sept. 20, 1962, Meredith unsuccessfully tried four times to enroll. Mob violence erupted, killing two people and injuring more than 200.
On Oct. 1, 1962, Meredith was escorted by federal officials as he enrolled.
